Conditions We Treat

ADD/ADHD
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affect kids and adults alike. Rather than controlling the condition through addictive drugs, we seek find the underlying cause and address that. Artificial colorings, preservatives, flavorings, and other foreign chemicals can have a profound impact on behavioral problems, especially in children.

We will work to identify food allergies and intolerances, and help you switch to a better diet. Your naturopathic doctor will help you with this, and you may be referred to our dietitian for more in-depth nutrition services. Your health care team may also prescribe nutritional supplements to help strengthen cognitive function and balance neurotransmitters.

Allergies
Do you have seasonal allergies? Do cats and dogs have you saying Ah-choo? You might be surprised to know that inhalant allergies are also related to food allergies. Lots of people have allergies or intolerances to foods, without even knowing about it. These intolerances cause chronic strain on your immune system, so you may react more to other things like pollen or pet dander. Some might also have low levels of cortisol, causing their immune system to go haywire.

Our primary strategy to help allergies is to help your immune system. We'll help you identify food allergies either through a simple blood test, or elimination diet. Then we'll help clear the problem up by removing offending foods from the diet, and prescribe supplements to help heal your digestive system if needed. We'll also assess your adrenal function, and if some allergies still persist, we will recommend nutritional supplements specifically aimed at taming your immune system. Pollen won't have a chance when we're done!

Anxiety & Depression
In our high pressure world where we need 30 hours in a day, many people suffer with anxiety. But, the cause can be different for each person. Some might have over-stimulation of their fight-or-flight response, while others may not be able to quiet an overactive mind. Regardless of the cause, we can help.

We have several things in our naturopathic tool kit to help with anxiety, including homeopathic remedies, balancing your neurotransmitters, assessing and correcting adrenal function, and relaxation techniques.

Asthma
Asthma can be triggered by allergies, cold weather, exercise, stress… a host of things! Regardless of the trigger, the underlying cause of asthma is the same: inflammation and spasm of the airways. So, when we treat asthma we look at addressing what's causing the chronic inflammation and spasm.

We'll take a look at your food allergies and adrenal function. Nearly everyone we see with asthma has problems in these two areas, with cow's milk being especially important. Next, we'll target inflammation through dietary changes, nutritional supplements, and IV therapy as your doctor feels appropriate. We'll also talk about your home environment, and figure out things you can do to make it better for allergies.

Cancer
Many patients enter our office having been diagnosed with cancer and undergoing conventional cancer treatments. Our goals for an individual with cancer are to educate about diagnosis and treatment options, support health during conventional surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, and prevent recurrence with health supporting choices and natural therapies. Our therapies are targeted at immune stimulation and protection of healthy cells from the harmful effects of radiation and chemotherapy. In addition, we prescribe plant medicines, nutrients and other natural substances known to prevent and reverse specific cancers in animal and human studies.

Persons with or without cancer are welcome to test their immune systems and some of the biochemical risk factors for developing it. An example of one of the more important tests is Natural Killer (NK) Cell Activity. This test measures not only the numbers of NK cells, but also how well they kill tumor cells. NK cells are the primary defense the immune system has against cancer cells.

Chronic Colds/Congestion
Are you always catching what ever is going around? Maybe you have chronic sinus infections? Or, perhaps your child has ear infections. You don't need to resign to a life of Nyquil, antibiotics and ear tubes. These problems are most often caused by an over-burdened immune system. When the immune system is working overtime dealing with foods you're eating, it doesn't have time to focus on germs. The result? Frequent infections.

We'll start by looking at food allergies, and eliminate the offending foods. We may also use homeopathy to strengthen your constitution, and nutritional supplements to boost your immune system and reduce allergies.

Diabetes Whether you have Type I or Type 2 Diabetes, you will receive one-on-one nutritional counseling where we’ll review your diet, and create a personalized eating plan to help manage your condition. We’ll also address other conditions that can occur with diabetes, such as high blood pressure, heart disease or kidney disease.

Eczema Dry, itchy patches of skin, called eczema, can be caused by several things. First, we’ll look at and optimize your essential fatty acids, followed by optimizing the good bacteria in your gut. Following that, homeopathy and food allergies can also be helpful for eczema.

Fibromyalgia There are many things that can cause or contribute to fibromyalgia. First, we’ll address your diet and correct any nutritional deficiencies, such as magnesium, which can cause many symptoms of fibromyalgia. While we’re talking food, we’ll also look at food allergies and remove any offending foods. This usually helps many symptoms of fibro. Also, tick borne illnesses such as Lyme Disease can cause fatigue, joint pain, and brain fogginess common in fibromyalgia patients. Using personalized combinations of nutrition therapy, plant medicines, homeopathy, and antibiotics when needed, we’ve had success helping many patients with fibromyalgia.

GERD GERD, also called heart burn, occurs when stomach acid travels up out of the stomach, irritating the esophagus. This is conventionally treated by reducing the amount of acid in your stomach. However, GERD is often caused by too little stomach acid. I know, that sounds strange! Acid causes your stomach to empty, so when you don’t have enough acid, the food sits in there longer, having more of a chance to come back up through the esophagus. Using acid-reducing drugs long-term can lead to ill effects – by reducing stomach acid, the protein you eat won’t be well digested, vitamin B12 isn’t properly absorbed which can cause neurological problems, calcium isn’t well absorbed leading to bone brittleness, and you’re at an increased risk of food borne illness because most bacteria can’t survive in a normally acidic stomach.

Our approach is different. We strive to get to the root cause. Using a simple test, we will measure your stomach acid, and then prescribe supplements to correct it. We’ll also use plant medicines which will soothe and heal the esophagus and digestive tract.

Heart Disease
We regularly diagnose and treat individuals with elevated risk factors for cardiovascular disease. These risk factors include elevated total and LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and lower HDL cholesterol.

Research abounds identifying homocysteine as a significant risk factor for atherosclerosis, yet most people have not had the test. We offer an entire panel of testing, including the above tests and others not commonly done. Specific, individually tailored nutritional and lifestyle treatment plans with repeat testing help to reduce our patient’s risk factors for having heart disease.

High Blood Pressure High blood over time can damage your blood vessels, leading to hardening of the arteries, stroke, and kidney damage. There are many different causes including diet like too much sodium or not enough potassium, heart disease, stress, smoking and a sedentary lifestyle. We’ll look at all of these factors and create a personalized treatment plan of diet, nutritional supplements, and lifestyle changes you can make.

Fertility/Infertility If you’re thinking about getting pregnant, or have been having a hard time while trying, we can help. We’ll teach you how to track your monthly cycle to figure out when you ovulate, prescribe some prenatal vitamins, help you with nutrition, and assess and optimize your hormone balance.

Irritable Bowel Disease Irritable Bowel Diseases, like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, are caused by inflammation of the digestive system. Food allergies and too much “bad” bacteria can cause inflammation. To treat IBD, we’ll investigate food allergies and remove problematic foods from your diet. We may also recommend probiotics, special carbohydrate diets, or plant medicines aimed at reducing inflammation.

Lyme Disease Lyme Disease is carried by the deer tick, and occurs when you are bitten by a tick infected with the Lyme Disease bacteria. In our area, an estimated 50-70% of deer ticks carry this bacteria. Acute Lyme Disease can cause a bullseye rash, joint pain, fatigue and other symptoms. Chronic Lyme Disease, which occurs when acute Lyme Disease is untreated for months or years, can have a wide range of symptoms including joint pain, fatigue, brain fog, and neurological problems similar to MS or ALS. Each case is very different. We’ll order special tests to look for Lyme Disease, and also other tick-borne infections. Once a diagnosis is made, we’ll created a personalized regiment of antibiotics, dietary therapy, and nutrition and botanical supplements to bring you back to health. More Info on Lyme Disease

Macular Degeneration The macula is an area in the back of the eye which can become damaged leading to loss of vision. We can offer supportive measures to help improve or reverse macular degeneration. Using aggressive nutrition therapy, we optimize specific nutrients which normally build up in the retina, protecting it from damage. Once this is restored, we’ll also make changes to your diet to maintain these nutrients.

Menopause When women go through menopause, their estrogen and progesterone levels go down. This is conventionally treated with estrogen, usually derived from the urine of pregnant horses, but no progesterone. The imbalance of these hormones can cause problems down the line such as an increased risk of breast cancer. Also, as your body adapts to these new changes, weight gain may occur, bones may begin to thin (osteoporosis), and heart disease may begin or worsen.

We only use hormones that are identical to those produced by the human body, and we always make sure estrogen is balanced with progesterone. We’ll also address your diet to prevent weight gain and heart disease, and monitor your bone density to prevent or address osteoporosis. More Info on Hormones

Migraines Migraines can be caused by numerous things – diet, nutritional deficiencies, hormones, chemicals and fragrances, fluorescent lighting, just to name a few. Rather than cover the symptoms with a one-size-fits-all pill, we’ll work to uncover the root cause of your headaches. Once identified, your doctor will use any combination of nutrition therapy, plant medicines, homeopathy, and bioidentical hormones to gently bring your body back into balance, headache-free.

Neurological/MS/ALS If you’ve been diagnosed with MS, ALS or other neurological problem, we can help. Although each condition is different, we’ll make sure your nutritional needs are being met. Essential fatty acids and vitamin D directly affect brain function, while vitamins B6, B12 and folate affect nerve function. We’ll check these essential nutrients, and optimize your levels where needed. There have been cases of Lyme Disease and other tick-borne illnesses which manifest as neurological diseases, so we may order special tests to look at this, too.

Osteoporosis Numerous women diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis have increased their bone densities back to normal with our treatments. We request baseline bone density tests of the spine and hip to measure risk for osteoporosis and if we find someone already with bone loss, we begin her on a treatment plan to build bone and have it measured a year later to make sure the bone density is increasing.

PMS Do you suffer from mood swings, water retention, food cravings, breast tenderness, fatigue, and other symptoms a week before your period? PMS occurs because of hormonal fluctuations. We can help by assessing your hormone status, and prescribing natural hormones to help balance your system. Mineral deficiencies, such as zinc and cooper, can also affect your hormones so we’ll look at that too. More Info on Hormones

Rheumatoid Arthritis Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the joints. We can help you manage your rheumatoid arthritis and feel better. Did you know that the types of fat you eat can not only worsen the pain, but worsen the condition? It’s true. We’ll help balance these fats, make some changes to the foods you’re eating, and prescribe nutrition and plant medicines to decrease inflammation. You’ll feel a difference!

Stress and Your Health
The adrenal glands bear the brunt of stress in our lives. They also regulate many crucial functions in our bodies and minds, such as our immune system, energy production, thyroid function, bone and skin health, and sleep quality. When we encounter stress as a onetime event, our adrenal glands easily rise to the challenge and secrete large amounts of hormones to meet the demands. If however, we have continual stress and our adrenal glands have to overwork for years, we can suffer the effects of too much adrenal hormone. Sometimes, after years of over stimulation, they can become fatigued or "exhausted", producing too little of this hormone. In each of these phases, we can be susceptible to loss of health. More Info on Hormones

Ask us to consider the Adrenal Stress Index Test if you have:

  • Chronic Stress and related health problems
  • Ashma and allergies
  • Lack of vitality and energy
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Migraine headaches
  • Osteoporosis
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Poor memory
  • Stress maladaptation
  • Low Sex Drive
  • Low body temperature

Weight Loss Feeling stuck with weight loss? Don’t know what to listen to or where to start? We can help. We’ll devise a personalized weight loss diet by calculating how many calories you should eat, and how much protein, carbs and fat. We can also measure your body fat percentage. Metabolically, the doctors can assess your hormonal function – thyroid, adrenal, and sex hormones – which affects weight loss, and correct any imbalances that are found. But most importantly, we’ll work with you to create a plan you can stick with.
